Pilates is a physical fitness system developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. It principally aims to balance the body, improve mobility, teach controlled fluid movement and bring focus to the breath and alignment. It is famous for strengthening the “core” or “powerhouse” but is actually a system that trains the whole body in an integrated, rhythmical, dynamic way through precise, intentional movements.
Lee Pilates is a contemporary Pilates practice, meaning she does not adhere strictly to the teachings of Joseph Pilates, but structures her programs more on current movement science and body mechanics research. In traditional Pilates, there is a great deal of forward flexion of the spine. Lee Pilates focuses more on the posterior chain to counterbalance faulty movement and postural patterns frequently found in contemporary times.
